SHORE EXCURSION IN ITALY: PORTOFINO
We will start our shore excursion from the port of Genoa (with a trip of about an hour and a quarter) or Savona (the journey is approximately an hour and three quarters) by bus towards Santa Margherita Ligure, from where we will reach Portofino by boat. During the excursion we will visit the church of Saint George. According to the plaque into the church, it seems to have been built in 1154, although some excavations have led to the supposition that it has been built at the Lombard period. We will admire the Romanesque architecture and we will discover the place where the relics of the city’s patron saint are; according to a belief, they have been recovered by fishermen of Portofino, returning from the Crusades.
The Brown Castle is a defensive building and noble house used over the years as a fortress to defend the city. Purchased at the end of the nineteenth century by Sir Montague Yeats Brown, it underwent various architectural transformations: one of the most significant changes, in addition to the raising of the towers, the transformation of the old parade ground in a roof garden. Today the castle has become the heritage of the town of Portofino and the history of the place and hosts numerous cultural exhibitions.
Finished the excursion, we will leave from Santa Margherita Ligure to Genoa, and we will drive back to the port for boarding.
