We will start our shore excursion from one of the most important streets of Cagliari, Via Roma. We will drive along boulevard Merello, surrounded by the walls of the city, reaching the Belvedere. Our bus will leave us here, from where we will admire the Roman amphitheater, before crossing the Porta Cristina to get into the ancient citadel. Here, in the heart of Cagliari, we will walk among lanes and historic buildings, and we will reach the magnificent cathedral, the most important monument of the city.
Next to the cathedral is the Archbishop's Palace and the Palace of the Prefecture, which was the residence of the Viceroy Carlo Alberto. Then we will walk up to the Bastion of Saint Remy, and we will have some free time to take photos.
Then we will continue our tour towards Constitution Square, where we will take our bus, in order to reach the Basilica of Bonaria, an important sanctuary of Cagliari built in 1325/26 by Alfonso of Aragon, conqueror of Sardinia.
Another important step will be on Urpino Mount, the hill that dominates the city. Its panoramic position gives us a great view of the harbor, the hills of Capoterra and the Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s saddle), and the Poetto beach, with its salt mines and its lagoon which offers shelter to thousands of flamingos that nest in Molentargius lagoon.
We will enjoy of this beautiful view, before returning to the port for boarding.
